Zelensky’s Press Secretary Returns From Exile With a Message for the Tyrant

So, thank you for coming back and I just want to say I'm sorry. I knew there would be repercussions for your first interview that you did earlier this year with us and apparently they were there were. Can you tell us what happened after that interview aired? >> Well, yes. Um actually thank you for giving uh me the platform first time and now because uh right now Ukrainians are facing huge censorship everywhere thanks to Val Zalinski and um our interview for me was a trouble. I know that our after our interview, Zalinski ordered to have uh some kind of uh so-called linguistic expertise uh and this is a corrupt practice that exists in the government of Ukraine that helps them prove something that they want to prove to execute their political persecution. Uh so this linguistic expertise is still ongoing. However, um I'm already under sanctions. If this linguistic expertise uh is finished, I'm going to face the treason charges that in Ukraine under martial law uh can be from 15 years of prison to life sentence. So uh this is absolutely crazy but let me explain why I am under sanctions. I was invited to have a speech in the European Parliament by the Alternative for Germany RFD uh one of the the most actually popular party in Germany. And this was supposed to be a speech about uh the necessity of peace uh for Ukraine. Uh we announced this speech um I think approximately September 10th and on 13th of September, Zalinski um introduced imposed sanctions on me. Um so what happened next was that when I arrived to the European Parliament on September 16th when my speech needed to take place I was buried from entering the European Parliament and we were told they didn't know the reason but that uh personally uh Roberto Metsah who is the head of the European Parliament uh banned me from entering. They also tried to ban um the video transmission and they did not allow to translate my speech into German and French. Thanks to FD um we managed somehow technically to have video transmission and I even answered the questions. Uh however this shows a very huge problem because I had a lot of questions from Western journalists why Ukrainians don't speak about the necessity of peace. One journalist even told me that he had a feeling that no one in Ukraine except of Julia Mandel wanted peace. But I see this growing tendency and I'm sitting here absolutely sure that majority of Ukrainians want peace as soon as possible because I got enormous support from everywhere but nobody sees that. And I thought that it was the problem. you know, Ukrainians didn't um have enough people to talk, enough contacts, uh enough, you know, experience or skills to reach the bigger platforms. But it happens that there is just a censorship, a huge censorship. Nobody wants to listen to Ukrainians who call for peace. And this is um to be frank, this is so heartbreaking and so disappointing because Ukraine today is looking at European Union and the place at the place of democracy or freedom of speech but in fact it is very far from the reality um yeah so um I'm under sanctions what it means uh it means that uh I cannot make any financial um operations in Ukraine no buying selling properties cars nothing my financial accounts are banned my business accounts are canceled banned I cannot have any bank accounts today But uh there is another thing that Zalinski introduced in the sanctions. my uh three accounts in social media. It is Facebook, Instagram and X. And he um requested that these accounts are banned from Ukrainian audience from the people who live in Ukraine. And if it's possible, I would really love to to appeal to address today to the people who work in matter company and in a not asking only for myself, but asking for all Ukrainians who are on systematic basis are banned um from talking to the Ukrainians in Ukraine. This happens all the time. I know the bloggers who repeatedly restart their pages because they call for peace and then the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine requests to ban their accounts from from Ukrainians. And um if it's possible, I just would like to underline that for Ukrainians today, social media is the only way actually to to talk about peace. And uh um if if these accounts are banned, my accounts and accounts of other Ukrainians that then it actually disrupts any kind of communication because Ukrainians today discuss what are the possibilities of peace, how we see it, what are the issues for postwar Ukraine, what we can accept. This is the real matter and um I really would ask you know to to to be attentive to this because this is our way to show the world to show journalists to show politicians that there is this necessity to have peace. >> It it's such a remarkable story. Um, I remember our interview very well and in it you spoke as a Ukrainian, as a Ukrainian nationalist, as someone who loves Ukraine, as someone who was very critical of Russia and Vladimir Putin. You spoke directly to Putin in the interview. Um, and not in a friendly way. You said, "Please stop." And so nothing you said, nothing I've seen you say is pro-Russian or anti- Ukraine. you're simply against watching your entire population, male population get killed. And so I don't understand how is that treason. >> Uh yes. So this is a very corrupt practice in Ukraine that actually allows the the politicians to persecute these loyal people and Zalinski doesn't want anyone to talk about peace because um you know GT Benz once wrote an remarkable essay in the New York Times where he said that the math in Ukraine does not add up and over two years have passed through that since that essay and the math in Ukraine still doesn't add We lose people every day. We lose territories every day. Just uh for you the latest information that we got. Um the prime minister of Poland said that our his Ukrainians colleagues told him that Ukraine loses killed and wounded 27,000 of soldiers monthly in the front line. Uh add to this only verified UN numbers of killed and wounded civilians and it is around 3,000. So we get around 30,000 of Ukrainians, soldiers and civilians dead or wounded every month, right? It's a terrible number. And um if you think about uh the number of population in 35 years of independence, Ukraine has lost over half of its population, right? So um to be frank, the war of attrition with Russia is nothing but suicidal policy, suicidal war. So I never justified what Putin has done and I call this the crimes against humanity and I will reiterate his cruelty is unimaginable but it does not mean that what Zalinski is doing is good for Ukraine because his policies are also suicidal absolutely suicidal. So uh we counted the population in Ukraine and right now maximum we have four million of men of of conscription age. In Russia there are uh 38 42 million of men. So 10 times more. I mean this is absolutely suicidal to continue this war. And let me say you that many people who support Ukraine they think that if Ukraine continues this war we will stay independent and uh preserve our sovereignty. But this is very much vice versa because we are following now Afghanistan path. And if this war continues, we have many more chances to become a vassal state and actually to have enormous degradation of society, economy and everything. Then if we try to find realistic paths towards peace today and then try to restore our economy, our democracy, have elections, you know, try to return our people and maybe later with time if we have good diplomats at the table, maybe, you know, just maybe we will be able to return the territories. But right now, we're choosing between the territories and people and we are losing boss. But most importantly, we lose our people. So this was what I told in the European Parliament and um after that Roberto Matsola sent her chief of staff to the IFD. He tried to apologize uh to the organizer from IFD Hansov and said that uh they were um told that I'm going to spread Russian propaganda. I'm a Ukrainian patriot. Uh I'm uh having a lot of support from Ukrainians from every region today. uh writing ma you know messaging comments everything people wanted this to be out and um another point of this before this uh speech was banned um I tried actually to reach the chief of staff of Roberto Misola I wanted to talk to him I was eager to show him this speech but they didn't want to listen to anything they just banned it based on getting information from Ukraine some Ukrainians uh were writing that this is personally Zalinski who asked Roberto Metsah to ban me from the speech and now I'm facing a lot of attacks on social media. Uh my accounts are being attacked. A lot of boards are there. Uh you know they're even trying to ban my telegram channel. So I guess that there is a huge attention from the office of the president. All his you know talking heads we were talking about talking heads. They are attacking me. But there is this fight. At least there is this fight. And I need to tell you that our interview really opened uh a lot of things for Ukrainians. I got a lot of thanks. A lot of bloggers started talking more about what's the they see around about the necessity to stop the war. I got a lot of thanks. They said, "Thank you, Julia, for your interview to Tucker Carlson. You opened our eyes." How many Ukrainians do you believe have been killed or wounded since this war began? >> Well, I think there's hundreds of thousands. hundreds of thou thousands and don't forget about millions of families that have been destroyed because you know they've turned into refugees or they lost someone or there are people you know with lost limbs and you know something also very disgusting happened on that day. So um Usola Wonderland the head of European Commission at the same day she decided to have a speech in the European Parliament too and she invited a Ukrainian girl 10-year-old girl who lost her uh limp due to Russian shelling. She's a dancer and she continues dancing and um Ursula Fondonder showed this girl and made PR on her and with this girl she justified the necessity to continue the war in Ukraine. It caused a lot of outrage because I look at this girl and this is the difference of perspective. I look at her and I I beg to stop this war that Ukrainian children don't lose their limbs eyes. You know, my parents are doctors at frontline regions and the stories that they tell about children, you know, that they get in the hospitals, they are terrifying like, you know, wound in the head or lost uh hand or for instance a 23 days old girl that was killed due to Russian shelling. And again, I'm not minimizing Russia's guilt. The thing is that if we want to preserve Ukraine, Ukrainian nation, we need to think about realistic ways of how to stop this war. But what I see the landscape is doing, he keeps changing the conditions for the peace. And he also introduces so maximalist unachievable ways for the peace that I don't believe that he wants to get it at all. That's there have been calls uh from some in the neoconservative foreign policy community here in the United States and in Europe to start drafting women because so many Ukrainian men have been killed. Draft Ukrainian women and send them into the meat grinder. Is that a popular idea in Ukraine? Do you think? >> Uh it's not popular idea to fight at all. Neither for men nor for women. uh it caused a lot of hatred, a lot of outrage and to be frank a lot of desire to leave the country. Um I will just remind you that our after our interview I cannot return to Ukraine because there is a huge intent uh attention to that question. However, I believe that if if they move with further mobilization of women and uh lowering the conscription age, there could be really a revolution and um Ukrainians are at the verge. Let me just describe you a few facts about how the force mobilization is happening. So um by uh on bootsman data only two 3% of men have been forcefully conscripted to the front line actually get to the fight. All others pay bribes. We counted and the conservative only count of the bribes that exist in the sector of force mobilization to avoid front line can reach up to $5 billion annually. This is enormous corruption. And this is so enormous corruption that we understand that it is covered from the top. It cannot just exist on the middle or lower level. Another uh thing that was discovered our after our interview was um that uh actually in conscription offices there are torture, beating, some men uh die. Uh and this is so inhuman. Uh actually on the streets of Ukraine today uh women defend men. There there is fighting sometimes. Sometimes men need to use their weapons against the state that tries to drag them to the front line or demand bribes. And there is a huge opposition towards both the war and Zilinski's government. It is so terrible. So many men, they even do not get out of their house for weeks, months, and some men sit in their houses for years just to to you know, not to be grabbed on the street, not to be beaten, not to be tortured, and not to be sent to the front line. I cannot imagine. This is my country. This is so painful. I cannot imagine how anyone could say this is Russian propaganda. This is everywhere. Every Ukrainian is standing against it. And I'm here to beg you to understand that only finishing this war can preserve Ukraine as a nation and the state. So yeah, >> we we um have been told in the west that democracy Ukraine is fighting tyranny Russia, but there are no elections for president in Ukraine. How how do you think if Zilinsky were to allow an election, if he were to stand for election, let voters decide whether to keep him in office, would he win that election? >> You know, I will tell you the inside that today was uh out uh but I knew this earlier. Uh in July or June, Zalinski was thinking about conducting elections, but he actually didn't want to have free elections. He wanted to have them manufactured. So he invited the former commanderin-chief and his chief of staff who enjoys some kind of rating today in Ukraine and uh asked them uh not to run for presidency but to support him as the only candidate of of the potential alliance and um at least one of them refused uh and um under any circumstances it doesn't matter how corrupt the elections in Ukraine today are Zalinski doesn't have chances to win them. So he understood that he will lose elections and um now we hear the public statements that um we cannot just conduct the elections. We have a lot of people out of the country. Then the next reason we have soldiers who cannot vote in front line. Then the next reason we have a lot of shelling so we cannot organize elections. So he will be coming up with any kind of reason to explain to the public why elections are not possible. But I will remind to your audience that up for today he's staying in power for seven and a half years. And for him finishing this war is a suicidal policy because this is a political suicide. He's not going to stay in power. This war gives him money, gives him power and gives him um gives him red carpets and the fame that he enjoys. Why doesn't the United States, which is making this war possible through the targeting information it gives the Ukrainian military from our intelligence agencies, why doesn't the Trump administration force Zalinski to leave? He's not an elected leader. He's eliminated civil liberties, freedoms in Ukraine. Why not just tell him to leave and have an election? You Russia had wartime elections. You can have wartime elections. It happens all the time. Why Why don't they do that? I cannot answer for President Trump. Um but maybe he doesn't want to meddle in the politics of another country, you know. Um the problem is that uh since the the last time we talked um President Zalinski um uh changed the strategy and uh he convinced the western partners to have escalation and this escalation has worsened situation in Ukraine enormously. So for us, for for Ukrainians, it was really very weird to read the American news for the first half of summer where American media outlets were saying that Ukraine is winning the war because we never have been even close to winning the war. We were suffering and uh in July we had the record of civilian death and wounded people since uh May 2022. Uh actually what happened Russia started destroying our warehouses. We have over 90% of warehouses destroyed with all the everyday needs that you know Ukrainians as ordinary people use including food, including you know clothes, including gadgets and and and many other things. We have destroyed gas stations. We have uh enormous ruins in uh uh energy infrastructure etc etc. So what Ukrainians are expecting is actually a humanitarian catastrophe in winter and many are leaving today. So the west should expect more refugees and to be frank it is very inhuman to not accept them because I don't know how people will be surviving without heat without light without food you know in the country under shelling with autocratic ruling where people can be grabbed on the streets and sent to the front. >> Most people don't like thinking about life insurance. Why do you think so many European leaders want a want to join the war? Mertz in Germany, Bernham in Great Britain, Mcronone in France, they all have said we, you know, we're going to join this war with Ukraine. Why? >> That's uh such an interesting question. So many people are asking me that and I would really encourage my western media colleagues, journalists to investigate deeper what's happening there behind you know media publicity with all this bronze production right but just for your audience to explain how the distribution of aid for Ukraine works. So uh for instance if we are promised 45 billion of yra per year like 30 for instance 30 billion of this money goes to drunk production or weapons production and majority of this money doesn't go to Ukraine it goes to the countries who actually distribute the money so um like Ryan mele for instance or French producers so these weapons producers really enjoy enormous amounts of money and to be frank Um as a PR person I was following this enormous PR happening in media and I think that if we follow the money we can explain a lot of things happening like for instance just before NATO summit in Anara in July there were all these messages that Ukraine was winning the war and then uh Mark Rut announced 140 billion euro of aid and in a week we didn't get any more messages about Ukraine winning and in two weeks we started getting messages that Ukraine is losing, Ukraine doesn't have interceptors, we are having humanitarian catastrophe approaching, etc., etc., etc. Then uh at the end of summer, we started reading a lot of news about um starting off World War II, about Russia trying to attack NATO countries, though a lot of NATO officials were saying that they don't see any kind of preparation for this. And again I don't want anyhow to flatter Russia or to justify what it is doing. But it is very strange to hear that the country that cannot cope with Ukraine that is not in NATO not in EU and doesn't have even its own economy would want to attack NATO countries. So then we understood that at the same time when there are these media headlines media headlines uh there is a discussion of the next seven-year budget from 2028 to 2034 and of course um the defense budgets there are very tasty. So perhaps European Union just wants to preserve those defense budgets and uh uh to preserve them uh they need to justify uh uh in the media and today people why their defense budgets are so huge. So they say about the World War II, you know, they escalate the rhetoric. I'm just afraid where it will lead over us because um when I see the taste of Europeans towards the war, I don't believe that Europeans want to fight and actually the rating of Mr. Mer for instance, recordly low 10% and and getting lower and lower. Tell us about that. And then we have the AfD party that promotes peace and they break the record of popularity because people don't want war. People want their leaders to talk to Russia. People want their leaders to guarantee that there will be no war. And as a Ukrainian, I will tell you that many Westerners, ordinary people, they look at this war as Hollywood movie. And it is not. It is a disaster. It is a degradation of morality of a humanity. It is death. It is the worst thing that could happen to you. I'll remind you the story how one American professor advised an American student to go to the front line in Ukraine. The guy went there. He was shocked from the reality. He planned to get him out and uh the professor just sent every one of us makes history in their own place. What is that? I mean, how many professors there in America actually, you know, uh try to send your students to the war? Don't do that. Help us stop the war. Um, yeah. >> Well, how many professors in the United States are serving on the front lines of the Ukraine war? How many neoonservative think tank employees are doing that? Is is Zalinsky volunteering to go fight his own war? Of course not. None of the people pushing this war are putting their own lives at risk. They're destroying an entire population for money, popularity, power, but none of them are willing to die for it. Other people die for it. >> If I may add, when Zilinski was not the president, he was invited to join the front line in Donbas for four times. And he did not do that. He declined. He avoided conscription. And now he is grabbing men on the street and sending them forcefully to the front line. Wait, Zilinski himself avoided conscription >> four times. Yes, this is public information in Ukraine. So, he's very far from Churchill that he is compared to. And there is another story. Um, you know, I come from mainstream media. I respect my colleagues who work there. But I had this very strange experience when I wanted to publish an article about peace and I sent it to a very famous American media and they declined. Of course, without any explanation. I didn't have any attack on Zilinski there. You may still read it online. You know, there was nothing political. There was just a Gallup poll that was saying that majority of Ukrainians wanted peace and there were argumentation why we needed to have either ceasefire or peace because we were we were just declining, degrading as a nation. So I was declined to publish that piece. And u in some time I saw how the same media published a London professor who actually was justifying this war because he was saying how Russia is suffering without mentioning how Ukraine was suffering, how much we were losing, you know, how many people we were losing. So I just Googled if this professor has ever been to Russia or to Ukraine and I was shocked to know that no, he has never been to any of these countries. He just gets his information from uh social media and um that's how he has you know some kind of imagination in his head of what's going on and he produces this to your people and so your people believe that this war has any kind of justification. What I understood after Zalinski convinced western partners to have escalation of this war is that in the west many more people want Russia burn than Ukraine to be saved. Right. >> And this is a terrible realization to be frank because my country is dying in front of you and you keep applauding one man on red carpet who sells you I'm sorry to say total nonsense, total So I'm here to back from Ukrainians.
