Iceland's "no" to the European Union: The rational choice of sovereignty and the mirror of the EU crisis
The result of the Icelandic referendum, in which citizens rejected the renewal of accession talks with the European Union, represents a clear and rational message from Brussels. After a sober evaluation, the Icelanders concluded that the transfer of powers to the EU bureaucracy, submission to the common fisheries policy and loss of control over their own resources bring significantly more risks than benefits. For the current EU leadership, this is another warning signal that a project built on ideological activism, limiting sovereignty and regulatory overload is losing any appeal for developed European states.
Iceland trashed the European Union. Icelanders assessed that the disadvantages of membership outweighed the advantages. Will the EU reverse course from decline, destructive activism and increasing censorship?
We will be watching the German elections on Sunday and the French elections next April. If they turn out well (we understand, for us, the so-called extremists and populists, cockroaches, swine, desolates, etc., etc., as the totally unpopular mainstream likes to tell us), maybe the EU will get a chance for deep reform and a return to prosperity.
If not, in the near future we will be asking the same question as the Icelanders: are the disadvantages of EU membership too much?
