Czech television as Al-Qaeda opposition
If anyone still doubted that Czech Television is the media organ of the parties of the former Fial's government coalition, the events of the last few weeks completely mislead them. What the combined forces of opposition politicians and activists, together with managers, editors and other employees of Czech Television and Czech Radio are currently demonstrating in connection with the proposal to change the funding of public media, is far beyond the standard practice of politics and standard pluralistic, balanced, versatile and objective journalism.
But let's separate two things. One is the funding of public service media itself and the other is the content they present themselves with. The world of electronic media has changed dramatically in recent decades. Both in terms of technology and broadcast platforms, and in terms of the number of programs. However, the method of financing ČT and ČRo remained the same as in the first half of the 20th century. Television and radio fees are inefficient, irrational and antisocial, because over time they have gradually transformed into a strange degressive "household tax", the efficiency of their collection is problematic, a substantial part of the money does not reach its destination at all and, paradoxically, the poorest pay the most in relation to their income. The system is simply outdated.
If Fial's government, in this situation, and in complete contradiction to all its pre-election and post-election promises, on the contrary pushed through an increase in fees, even senselessly, because it illogically expanded the range of their payers, both natural and legal persons, it cannot be called anything other than a political crime. If we add to this the dissatisfaction of a large part of the public with the content of broadcasts, especially news and current affairs, and the resulting reluctance to support public media with mandatory "burners", it is evident that the time is ripe for a change. After all, this has already happened in most EU countries.
Complaints that the change in funding will threaten the independence of public media are completely odd. Whether we pay them from the left pocket through fees or from the right pocket through the state budget, it is always decided by exactly the same politicians. And the employees are still paid by the same accounting office, and where the money comes from has no bearing on the employees. The argument of why change something when it works is also ridiculous. Nothing works! How does the system work when, according to a survey by the STEM agency, 52% of citizens do not trust Czech Television?
Czech television is not what it should be according to the law! It is supposed to provide objective, verified, balanced and versatile information for the free formation of opinions, it is supposed to contribute to the legal awareness of the inhabitants of the Czech Republic and it is also supposed to ensure that no political party or movement is unilaterally favored in news and political journalism programs. Czech Television does not comply with these legal provisions for a long time. It prefers one ideological and political direction in its reporting and journalism, and favors its protagonists in its broadcasting. Holders of other opinions, on the other hand, are selected, ostracized, dishonored and stigmatized. In summary: Czech television is not an independent source of information, but rather a propaganda tool.
All this in a situation where practically all households have to pay mandatory television fees. In this way, we finance something that not only a significant part of the public does not agree with, but something that directly harms us, because it disrupts free political competition and destroys the democratic legal order. We're funding something that divides society instead of connecting it.
Let's pour some pure wine. Czech television serves the opposition as its information, propaganda and power base, in translation Al-Qaeda. That's why opposition politicians are fighting for her as if the last battle had been fought. A mere change in funding is therefore not enough. This alone will not bring any significant change. It is necessary to define what a public service is and what it is not. Czech television (including Czech Radio) needs to be slimmed down, its management subjected to real public scrutiny, and most of all, its reporting and journalism should be opened to the entire spectrum of opinion.
While the embarrassing opposition and public law festival of hypocrisy, demagoguery and degenerate propaganda will continue to take place in connection with the proposed change in funding, kind readers, viewers, voters and taxpayers can wonder what Czech Television is for us in its current form:
So that she selects the information we can hear and which we can't? To impose EU, progressivist, climate, covid and Ukrainian propaganda on us? To graduate her political favorites on the screen day after day? To play the oldies of Vinnetou, Angelika, Schimanský, Kojak or the advice of Vacátka in prime time? To still feed us thirty-seven years after the velvet with series from the times of real socialism? To serve us similar content on six or seven channels for a mandatory fee, as commercial television offers for free? To plunder the archive week after week and produce endless editing programs with Bohdalka, Menšík, New Year's Eve and the magician, which will never come? To feed political non-profit activists with our money? So that she washes the heads of our children with political correctness? To be a source of livelihood for the boys and girls from the "Prague cafe", what do they talk to each other?
Are we sending billions to Kavčí hory for this? Why should we hold on to something that we don't agree with, and even that many people think is harmful to us?
